A clinical trial has demonstrated that stem cell therapy allows people with type 1 diabetes to manufacture their own insulin, eliminating the need for daily injections.

During a 12-patient trial, 10 patients were found to be able to completely discontinue insulin injections within a year. This new therapy is cantered around the infusion of cultured allogeneic stem cell-derived pancreatic islet cells into the liver, where they begin secreting insulin in response to blood glucose levels.
